Thresher Sharks, often called “Long-tailed Sharks,” are relatives of the Great White Shark. Threshers have a truly distinct tailfin. This long fin is very useful because Threshers often hang out just off the continental shelf. That’s a long trip to target such an elusive species, but they’ve been caught in the shallows of coastal NC. Like all sharks, Thresher sharks are very opportunistic. They’ll often travel to the shallows of NC coastal shoals to harass the plentiful baitfish of the area.
Thresher Sharks’ long tails make them very powerful swimmers. On top of that, Threshers have been recorded at lengths over 20 feet! They aren’t a common catch along our coast, but there’s always a chance. When shark fishing, you never know what’ll show up to the party!
